Corps Africa is a nonprofit organization that was created in 2011 by a former Peace Corps Volunteer. The organization seeks to recognize and build on the Peace Corps's enormous success by offering the same transformative experience to emerging leaders in Africa, giving them the chance to be a part of the solution for their own countries.
Every year, Corps Africa organizes a one-month 'pre-service' training. As part of each year’s activities, volunteers visited the Taaru Askan farm. Volunteers undertook several trainings provided by the Taaru Askan staff, which emphasized the benefits of eating healthy, the dangers associated with pesticide and chemical use in conventional farming, and the importance of organic gardening and farming in their local communities. Corps Africa staff and volunteers also participated in several team-building activities at the Taaru Askan farm.
YES Program
Youth Exchange and Study
(YES) Program English Camp
Every spring, the Youth Exchange and Study (YES) Program holds a two-week English language camp for students selected to go to the USA. The YES program is funded by the U.S. State Department and gives 14 Senegalese high school students an opportunity to live and study in the U.S. for one year.
A key component of the English language camp are trainings on urban gardening and organic farming. As part of their study on organic agriculture, students visit the Taaru Askan farm to experience organic farming firsthand. Students also participate in several community service activities, cleaning up litter from a nearby beach, painting signs for Taaru Askan, and taking care of newborn puppies.
Family Visits
We receive families with young and adult children interested in visiting the farm. It is a great chance for kids to experience the farm life by participating in farm work and learn about organic farming in Senegal.
